Our Vision For Music Exhibits
The Children’s Museum of Sound & Color is planning music education exhibits where visitors can explore genres, experiment with instruments, and immerse themselves in play while they learn. We envision spaces where children can dress up and play pretend while listening to artists to encourage a broader understanding of the musician’s culture and time period in which they lived. Reflecting Atlanta’s global influence on music and film, the museum also envisions opportunities for families to experiment with music and media production through hands-on studio spaces that support audio mixing, live recording, and beginner filmmaking activities that combine sound and moving images.
In our vision of the museum, visitors of all abilities will be offered opportunities to try new ways of experiencing sound and music. Many of the exhibits will revolve around the science of sound transmission and incorporate visuals or multi-sensory components. This includes sound experiment areas, audio illusions stations, and a water play exhibit which will allow visitors to visualize sound waves and experiment with underwater sound transmission. An interactive Beethoven exhibit will invite visitors to collaborate and experiment together on a piano with the legs sawed off where they can feel resonation through the floor. We also envision exhibits and tools curated to particularly enhance the educational opportunities for low hearing and deaf visitors, with optional tools for children to experience the exhibits as though they have low hearing. This includes virtual displays of music and sound, hands-on experimentation with acoustic transmission, and tactile vibration technology.
At the Children’s Museum of Sound & Color, we believe in creating spaces where all visitors can interact positively with sound. Whether the concern is for infant siblings brought along into louder rooms, or someone who experiences sound differently, we care about our visitors remembering us for all the right reasons. The museum plans to offer sensory guides that both categorizes exhibits by noise level and lists available sound modification tools in each space. Noise cancelling headphones and sound enhancement tools will also be made available for visitors to borrow during visits.
The sound exhibit areas in the Children’s Museum of Sound & Color will be a place for curiosity, engagement, and an opportunity for connection. Music is one of the great shared experiences that we can all enjoy regardless of our beliefs, knowledge, or cultural background. Our institution aims to excite and include visitors of all ages and abilities and unite them through their enjoyment of music and the power of sound.
