behind the Museum
The Children's Museum of Sound & Color began with the idea to bridge the gap between traditional art museums and children's museums.
Children's museums encourage visitors to play as they learn, but with so many different subjects, meaningful art and music exhibit space is usually limited. Traditional art museums have standard etiquette in their gallery spaces to protect the art they are showing. Unfortunately quiet, calm introspection while looking at art is not something many children under twelve find interesting or easy to do. We set out to create a space that combines the hands-on, child friendly mindset of the children’s museum with the culture of a traditional art museum, minus the etiquette expectations. A space where visitors can experiment, discover, and connect through hands-on, creative play.
Accessibility has been part of the museum's mission from the very beginning, with a focus on creating art and music educational experiences that welcome children who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or have low vision. As our vision has grown, so has our commitment to inclusion. Our founding organization members believe every child deserves the opportunity to discover, create, and experience the joy of art and music. We believe our future visitors will find that at the Children’s Museum of Sound & Color.
